Fishing Reports
FISH GALORE
After a couple of very slow days last week, both around Tiri and behind Kawau, we wait in anticapation for an improvement in the fishing. It’s happening!
The evening fish, on a patch of ground covered in what I would call rubble (broken shells and bits of reef), produced some excellent snapper of around 2-4 kilos. We ended up not having to move from the spot for the whole 5 hours, and ended up with the group being only a couple of fish short of the bag limit. The snapper were all in excellent condition. Fat bellys and clearly ready to spawn, they took a great liking to the lolago squid we were using and in fact turned up their noses at most other baits except pilchards.
The next day was no different with both trips securing close to the limit of fish from the same patch of ground. A few of the day group wanting to target the bigger specimens, went about lobbing butterflied yellowtail out the back of the boat into the incoming tide. This was rewarded with some blistering runs, 2 major bust offs, and securing a few fish around the 5-6 kilo mark. One was taken on 4 kilo line by a regular client of ours and kept him busy for a few anxious minutes.
Wanting a change of scenery yesterday, we ventured a few extra minutes out to the Tiri Passage and onto patch of scallops that usually fishes well early in the season. Suspicions were confirmed and the bin was filled, so we returned a very happy group and picked up the evening trip.
This was to fish a little slower than the day trip and with only limited time before dark, we had to move a few times to pick up a good number of fish from the foul around the top the passage and over the other side of Tiri. Again the snapper were in excellent condition and full of roe. A few kahawai were also secured for the smokers. It was the white lolago squid again that seemed to be the preferred bait.
It looks as if the season will finally gather a bit of momentum and as the water temp is now up around the magical 16 degree mark, some epic fishing will not be far away.
Speaking of not far away, all our weekend fish were caught within 20 minutes of the marina, making Gulf Harbour only a stone throw from the action.
As the season progresses we will post more regular reports to keep you up with the play and be offering some great specials on trips over the summer.
Labour weekend is just ahead of us and if your travel plans have been dampened by the tragedy overseas, why not come fishing. We have a casuals only day on Sunday 21st, and at only $55 per angler you would struggle to find a cheaper day out. Evenings are only $40 per angler and that golden hour at the end of the day is often the most productive time to fish. If you want to impress the boss why not chuck a sickie and take fresh fish into work the next day. $45 for a day trip midweek! At that at price you can shout the boss and let him catch his own fish.
