Fishing Reports
FISHING REPORT - WELLINGTON - 15.10.01
WEST COAST - OHAU POINT TO KAPITI
Another good catch of groper out from Makara was taken recently by a local commercial fisherman. He went out the next day and caught nothing. I have just heard a report of numerous kingfish hook ups at Hunters Bank, with a number caught. Like the groper, they were gone a couple of days later. Warehou have been patchy this winter, there one day and gone the next.
Hunters bank has been producing the usual XOS tarakihi, trevally and school groper in 80 - 100 meters. A recent catch of 5 trevally by Neil Palfreyman was a good catch.
We went there on the weekend but only caught tarakihi. The water visibility was amazing and there were fish eggs everywhere.
Pukerua Bay has still been producing snapper. We have had 4 and 3 fish on the last two visits. Nothing big, but snapper all the same. Good tarakihi and the odd school groper have also been caught out in 50 - 60 meters.
Verns Bank, south of Mana Island has been going well on the tarakihi with the odd school groper and warehou out in 75 meters.
Makara – We caught two nice john dory there a couple of weeks ago, both over 3kgs. We also got the normal tarakihi. The trevally haven’t been as big lately.
Kapiti - Jimi TF reported a 30lb kingfish (taken by a friend) at the south end of Kapiti Island recently. We had a nice haul of tarakihi there last week, and another fisho had a good catch of blue cod and kahawai.
Shore Fishing
I’ve heard no official reports apart from a groper caught landbased (2-3kg) around the Titahi Bay area. For surfcasters there is a good chance of trevally, tarakihi and spotted sharks on the sandy, shingle beaches - especially after dark and on the high tide. Makara, Opau and Te Ikamaru bays are all good spots.
Boom rock is a good spot for bigger tarakihi and potentially warehou as well. The first snapper and kingfish are also on the cards, especially around Pukerua Bay,
Fisherman’s Table or Boom Rock.
WELLINGTON HARBOUR
Elephant fish are the star of late. A friendly boat competition from WSAC yielded over 20 recently! One fisherman caught 7 last weekend in gale force southerlies.
Gurnard, trevally, kahawai and the odd snapper have been caught recently around Seatoun and the harbour entrance. Falcons Shoal and the wreck have both been producing good terakihi on the turn of light and tide.
Shore fishing
Good numbers of kahawai have turned up. Many in the 500 gm - 1kg class. Gurnard are still being caught but not as many as in the previous month. Some pilchards are being caught off the overseas terminal warf.
SOUTH COAST - CAPE TERAWHITI TO CAPE PALLISER
A splattering of blue moki have been caught over the last couple of weeks. Wainui, White Rock, Houghton Bay, and the beaches west of Sinclair head have all produced fish - just one or two at a time and nothing I have heard of over 2kg. Some nice salmon have been caught west of Sinclair Head as well lately.
A few trevally have been caught around White Rock and Fitzroy Bay. More spotted sharks have come from White Rock, Western Lakes and Wainui and gurnard are being taken at White Rock and Lyall Bay. Things haven’t really fired big time yet, but the next month should see catches improve.
Expect good numbers of moki over the next month, with hopefully some biggies about as well.
Lake Ferry has been good on the kahawai, reddies and spineys. A 14lb snapper was taken a month or two ago! Haven’t heard if salmon have turned up but I wouldn’t be surprised if a few have been caught by now. Call in and see Terry at Pirinoa garage for bait, tackle and good sound fishing advice.
Out in the boat
When it’s been fishable the Trench has been firing well. Big numbers of blue nose (to 20kg), and puka have been taken. Can be on and off at times but they should be firing real well from now on in, especially in the eastern trench area. There is also a sprinkling of bass in the middle trench out from the harbour entrance. I wonder if the bass will fire this season as the last was a bit quite.
Ling are in good numbers as well as hoki. We caught a rays bream recently as well.
Inshore has been good from Baring Head to Terakerea for big tarakihi and blues with the odd warehou and trevally thrown in for good measure. The crays should almost be out of egg now as well.
EAST COAST – WAIRARAPA
The Puka are starting to come on now, as well as trumpeter, and the usual big blue cod and tarakihi. The weather has been very rough of late though.
White rock is firing with the good catches, but swelly conditions have made fishing a bit tough. Plenty of red cod, kahawai and spineys are about but only a few gurnard and spotty sharks. Haven’t heard of any moki or trevally from there yet.
TOP OF THE SOUNDS
Norm Carsen reports good puka fishing out from Mc Manaways. He took 8 fish up to 50lb and didn’t even fish through the tide. Try fishing out on the sand rather than on the reef. Heaps of blue cod and terakihi are around upper Pelorus and over to Lambert, and the scallops are plentiful.
