Fishing ReportsNew Season OptionsHopefully everyone has had a chance to get out there and do some fishing since opening day. And hopefully you’ve all had as good a fishing as I have.
The streams and rivers of the Waikato/Kingcountry have all been running low and clear. The Waipa tributaries are where I have been concentrating most of my efforts. All the streams south of Kihikihi are holding large numbers of fish. Both rainbows and brownies are abundant. Lots of fish have been caught on the dry fly also. The streams could do with a fresh as they are carrying algae on the bottom, which we don't usually see until February.
Insect life is great and there are large hatches of both mayflys and caddis throughout the day. To compensate for the low stream levels, fish a attractor fly like a royal wulff with a nymph underneath, and double your chances.
At this stage I haven't heard about the rivers around Taumaranui, but they never had any flooding this winter. They should be looking great and will be well worth a trip down to explore. This summer will see some awesome fishing down this way and with the way things are heating up those xos brownies from the Waikato river wont be far off.
Until next time, may the fishing gods be kind.
Mike Davis.
