Fishing ReportsEastern and Hawkes Bay Regions Angling Reports for October 2001Lakes
Okataina, Rotoiti and Tarawera are expected to produce plenty of well-conditioned trout in October especially for the boat anglers. Lakes Rotoehu, Okareka and Rerewhakaaitu will also fish well in October for both the boat and shore angler. Lake Rotorua continues to produce consistent catches of quality trout. Rotorua trout are bigger than average this year with many rainbows over 2.5kg and browns over 4.5kg. Rumours of the odd huge brown trout over 8kg hooked and lost in Lake Rotorua were proven to be possible recently when a dead brown trout weighing 8kg was recovered from the Utuhina Stream. Lakes Aniwhenua, Flaxy, Waikareiti and Waikaremoana will have lots of hungry trout cruising the edges in search of anything that moves. These trout provide exciting sport for fly and spin anglers. The Waikato River and hydro lakes hold large trout populations and October can be a very good month for trolling or casting in close to the banks over weedbeds or amongst overhanging vegetation. Small lakes like Tutira, Kents, Opouahi, Okaro, Ngapouri etc also fish well in October as trout feed along the banks. Rivers All of the regions’ rivers are presently in good condition but watch that weather for opening day as this will dictate where you go. Small streams like the Makino, Makahu, Mangataura, Pongakawa, Waitahanui, Owhakatoro, Waihua and Opato are holding trout and October is the prime month to fish them before warm water temperatures and low flows force many of the trout to move downstream into the larger waters. Hawke’s Bay spring creeks like the Tutaekuri-Waimate and Maharakeke remain fishable in all but the very worst of conditions. Small hidden spring creeks are found in the lower Ngaruroro and Tutaekuri Rivers, Rangitaiki near Murupara and in the Waikato Catchment and while most only provide a few hours fishing they are special places to discover. The large waters are all well worth a visit as many trout will be feeding along the edges or in the eyes of the pools. If conditions are not the best on opening day on the main rivers then wait until flows start to drop and clear as this is the time to catch actively feeding trout in very shallow waters. October is a great month for fishing a river’s quiet edges, secondary currents and all those backwaters and creek mouths. A bonus for Rotorua anglers is the opening of the Utuhina stream on 1 October up to the Devon Street Bridge for both spin and fly fishing and the same for the Ngongotaha Stream up to the SH 5 bridge.
