Wellington Fishing Report
WEST COAST - OHAU POINT TO KAPITI ISLAND
By Boat - Just as I thought the groper had disappeared for their winter spawning, another good catch was reportedly taken out wide from Mana, in the vacinity of the 78 mtr rise. Warehou have been caught in numbers there as well.
The Hunter bank has been producing the usual XOS tararkihi, trevs and school groper in 80–100 mtrs. Catches of warehou have been more spasmodic out there.
Pukerua Bay has still been producing snapper. We’ve had 4 and 3 fish on the last two visits. Nothing big but snapper all the same. Good tarakihi and the odd school groper have also been caught. 50-60 mtrs is producing the best results.
Verns Bank, south of Mana Island has been going well with tarakihi, the odd school groper as well as the occasional warehou in 75mtrs depth. Haven't heard much about the inshore fishing but as usual tarakihi catches have been reasonable and legal blue cod hard to find, unless you venture south of Makara - especially Ohau Point.
Surfcasting - there is a good chance of trevally, tarakihi and spotted sharks on the sandy/shingle beaches, especially after dark and on the high tide. Makara, Opau and te Ikamaru Bays are all good spots. Boom Rock is a good spot for bigger tarakihi and
potential warehou.
HARBOUR
From the shore - the gurnard fishery has boomed over the last week with the best catches reported off Miramar Wharf, Greta Point and Flat Rock. The first snapper for the season was also taken off Miramar recently, but it was only a schoolie. I have just heard of a 7kg groper taken off the Lyall Bay breakwater. That spot is brimming with potential as it has very deep water and a rough bottom. The kingi potential is huge over the summer months and if more effort is put in I wouldn't be surprised if many good fish were taken there this summer. Red cod and kahawai are around but not in huge numbers.
By boat - good numbers of elephantfish have been caught over the last couple of weeks - up to 6kg. The best fishing is around the harbour entrance and Seatoun, on the edge of the shipping channel and over towards Eastborne, on the edge of weed banks. Gurnard fishing is very consistent at this time of the year as well. The odd big trevally has been caught in the same areas recently.
SOUTH COAST
From the shore - the first reported blue moki has been caught at Wainui recently – about 1.5kg. Red cod and kahawai are in reasonable numbers. Palliser Bay and White Rock have been full on, with reddies, kahawai and spiney dogs. A few nice spotty sharks have also been taken.
I wonder if White Rock will again be one of the real hotspots. Last season it fired well on gurnard and spotty sharks with the odd good catch of trevally and moki. Targeting kingfish on the rocks (northern end of the beach) and big sharks on the main beach are certainly worth a crack.
By boat - inshore fishing around the Island Bay coastline has been a bit tough but with good clean water, change of tide and good berley, it's hard to miss on the tarakihi and blue cod in this area. Best fishing is in 40-45mtrs. Warehou have been caught around Baring Head in good numbers. XOS tarakihi are still consistent around Terakerei. Our last mission down there gave us 8 nice fish in 45 minutes before the weather got bad. Schoolie groper are on the cards in that area as well.
DEEPWATER
The trench is firing well. Blue nose are being caught in good numbers. A friend caught 20 - 30 fish to 15kgs yesterday. We fished another spot and caught a real
mixed bag of ling, bass, groper, hoki, tarakihi and bluenose. The bluenose and ling
were in good numbers. It shouldn't be long until the groper turn up in good numbers as well. The best 'puka' fishing is normally between October and January at the
trench.
