Fishing Reports

Bay of Islands - Major Tom II

Well, Ive been back in the Land of the Long White Cloud for a couple of weeks with not too much report as Major Tom II still rests in the shed at Ashby's Boatyard receiving well deserved TLC. Discussions with those who were still fishing the Bay while I was luxuriating in the WARMTH of Hawaii, indicate some good, though patchy snapper fishing. Local rockhoppers have been taking some good fish off the eastern side of the Russell Peninsula, as have the small boats fishing close in to the rocks. Deeper waters are more difficult, with the usual winter plague of barracoutta, providing extra turnover for the tackle shops. Kingfish have remained a bit elusive, though 71M Reef seems to have fired when weather conditions have permitted. (Which iss not too often!!!) Our fears of increased commercial effort on the hapuka reefs seems to have been unfounded, and the few trips taken out to the 200M line have provided excellent catches. The huge fleet of Commercial Longliners, continues to extract large numbers of broadbill, and we just have to hope Pete Hodgson implements some sort of restriction before our stocks have reached the same sorry state as other fisheries in the Northern Hemisphere. Now that I'm back in the country, I'll be happy to answer any quieries or questions, for those of you who'd like to contact me at MAJOR.TOM@xtra.co.nz , and I'll try to answer the back log of mail ASAP.
