Fishing Reports
Channels are Barren but Look on the Foul.
I'm not the sort of person to try and pull the wool over your eyes so I'll be blunt. This last week has been a shocker, with only a few fish caught that were of a respectable nature.
The favoured patches of foul we have been doing well on, just failed to hold fish and none could be summoned up with the liberal use of berley. Very frustrating to be stuck in close and not be able to get to the fish due to wild weather. The fish around Tiri are very shy and all but a few of our bigger fish have been very soft on the bite. On a few occasions the angler didn't realise there was even a fish on the end until they went to take a little slack out of the line!
We did manage to get up to Flat Rock and fish the deeper areas only to find it tough going due to sea state and unenthusiastic fish. After venturing in close to get out of the wind, we did have some success landing a couple of fish over 5kg and about 6 nice trevally over 2kg.
On the way back down the coast we fished a couple of spots on the drift and added a few more snapper to the tally.
Motuora Island has been hot and cold. I can normally do quite well on the seaward side this time of year, especially around the change of light.
A lot of spots that fail to fire during the day can be on fire at dawn or dusk this time of year. We don't mind leaving early if you don't, but it may be a good idea to wrap up in a few layers. It's just abit nippy out there before sun up.
Signs of spring are around with the odd lamb showing up and I even saw a few spring bulbs flowering in the neighbours garden the other day. A good sign that things will shortly improve and the schoolies will return.
In the meantime we shall still try to get out wide and hit the deeper foul for those bigger specimens. When we can't, it will be onto the foul looking for the smaller ones, and a few of those other tasties like the john dory.
We think we may have perfected the lethal dory rig as we are getting dory on most trips from just about all the foul spots we've fished. Great table fish but not huge fighters. Live yellowtail seem to be the best bait. Set just above the bottom, on a shortish lead. Give it a try if you don't already.
Wrap up warm, pack a good lunch and lets get into them. Give us a call if you have not got a newsletter yet or email us your postal address so we can send one off to you. Due to the size of it (megabites), it can be a little slow to download so post may be a better option.
