Snapper Still Around in Hauraki Gulf

What a day yesterday! 50 odd snapper, a handful of john dory and trevally, heaps of kahawai and not a breath of wind or a drop of rain. Hope it's going to continue like that for the rest of the winter. We are still fishing the deeper foul around Tiri and Kawau, finding the high current areas to be best, although the back eddies and shallow bays have been producing also. A small group of 4 anglers, from Cambridge of all places, had a day out with us recently catching the biggest snapper they have ever caught and enjoying some northern hospitality. They had been travelling to Tauranga to do their fishing but had been finding it hard going, due to the fact there wasn't a casino in Tauranga. Fishing is a gamble so they told me! This weekend is looking crash hot so far as the weather goes and I'll be looking to get back onto the foul that has been working for us this last week. Saturday is a casuals day and there is still a few places left if your interested. Didn't get up to Flat Rock at all over the last week due to the weather, but hope to get back up there soon to target those BIG MOOCHERS that frequent the place. Anchorite was also out of bounds for us too. If you read the last report, you would have seen the bit about fishing out of the weather in the bays and river mouths. Did that. Worked well. Scored a few nice fish in Hobbs Bay in the berley trail, but once we had enough to fill the tummy, we jacked it in for the warmth and comfort of the living room. There was a big swell. Certainly provided alot of feed for for the fish and I think it's pushed fish in from the Gulf too. There is plenty of bait fish and kahawai around, and with terns working overhead, they are easy to find. We are off to the Barrier again next friday for another 3 day trip. Things should start to be looking good for puka and snapper by now and this group are chomping at the bit to get over there as they have had to postpone twice because of the weather. Places like the Needles and Simpson Rock usually hold good snapper this time of year with the added bonus of tarakihi. There is a few good areas of foul I've fished commercially that used to produce some good puka this time of year so they might be worth revisiting this trip. We have some great winter specials on trips at present so give us a call. Now is a good time to book ahead for the next month or so, or to get your social club or work group out for a day. 'av a good one Damian THE CHARTER CONNECTION LTD
