Fishing Reports

Rough Water Fishing

Often, when the wind starts to howl (especially when it tops the 40knot mark), the idea of getting out for a days fishing is quickly shelved in favour of sticking around and earing a few brownie points. BUT..... On occasion we take the boat just outside the marina into Hobbs Bay, inside Matakatia Island to a sheltered bay not too far away. Or even down to the Weiti River, for a spot of fishing. There is often hardly anyone about. The sea often provides a great deal of feed for the fish in the form of rock dwelling creatures ripped from their lodgings by the surge. We don't have to rock and roll around all day long. With the liberal use of berley and lightly weighted lines, or no weight at all, we strayline a fresh pilchard bait down the trail. When conditions are such as they are today, gloomy sky, plenty of surface cover and lots of fish tucker, the rewards for such an effort can be excellent table fare and great sport. I have a friend, who funnily enough loves this type of fishing, but indulges himself from the shoreline of sheltered bays in what around the corner would be attrocious conditions. He does very well in the rough off the breakwater at Gulf Harbour, Little Manly Beach, Mahurangi Harbour and such other sheltered locations. The only difference being, I can walk inside and put the kettle on and have a comfy seat out of the rain. The last week, was again a good one for us, until yesterday that is. Fishing in close and out of the increasingly sloppy sea, was very slow and quite disheartening. We couldn't get to where we had been fishing, so had to make do with what was available to us. Other charter boats did not do at all well either, but we can't wait for those calm winter mornings when we have options galore. We are getting stacks of bookings for the trips up to and around Kawau and as I've said in previous reports, the place can really fire, especially at dusk on the deeper foul. Book now and hit it while there is still some swell left on the place, after all this easterly wind is gone. Thanks to those of you that have emailed us for the winter newsletter and new brochure. We are getting around to all the replies now. Please include your postal address in case I can't get through on the 'pooter Email us at deepsea@kiwinet.net.nz Berley up and tight lines Damian
