Fishing Reports
Berley Trail Success.
Fishing up current from a favoured rocky ledge, produced about 2 hours of good snapper fishing for a few groups last week. With the generous deployment of berley and a heap of cubed pilchards, the fish were slow to get the right idea, but when they decided to feed, we caught some nice table fish to about 3kg. More than happy with the result considering things have slowed down considerably.
It appears there are still a lot of fish in the shallows and I'm having good success with a 4kg and a 6kg set up. Mid week is better too, when there are fewer boats around, buzzing through the shallows and scaring the fish off the bite or away from the area.
When we have ventured further afield and up to Flat Rock, the bigger baits, like a butterflied koheru or slab of kahawai, are getting nailed by snapper as small as 1kg. The bigger fish are there too but are a bit more wary. The area is showing heaps of promise and the next few trips this week are bound to be rippers. Pins and deep patches of foul through to big kelp beds and shallow sandy bays, means that you have a choice if one technique doesn't come to fruition.
Haven’t been out to Anchorite for a while now, so anticipate the place is holding some nice snapper and probably a few couda by now. Our last trip out behind Tiri on to the 175 line produced only small snapper despite there being heaps of birds working schools of anchovies. Didn't even see a kahawai.
