Fishing Reports
Hauraki Gulf Report
Recent heavy rain and the easterly swell we've had washed the slugs, snails and baby birds off the islands and into the reefs close to shore to produce some good fishing in close. Well it's a theory anyway!
On a day when the sea was not at its kindest, the tides were small, the moon was all wrong and the Maori Calender said stay in bed, a group of our local clients caught good numbers of pan size fish in close to Whangaparaoa Peninsula. I only parked the boat there as the anglers didn't want to roll around all morning in the swell and slop. Right in close in about 7 metres of water over the foul, that on a clear day you could've seen below. It's this time of year and in the following months, that if you can't get out wide to fish the more productive depths (see our last report) don't give up on the idea of going fishing. Instead, get in close and strayline baits down a berley trail into a bay or area of foul. More often than not, you'll return home with a feed or even a decent size fish that had taken up residence for the winter.
Flat Rock and the back of Tiri Island have been producing patchy catches of snapper, trevally, kahawai, john dory and the odd leather jacket.
One day you can get 1/2 dozen fish and feel like slashing your wrists in the wheelhouse on the way home and the next day you can hit the same spot and clean up. There's no rules in fishing. You have to take the good with the bad.
The area about 3-4 miles north east of Tiri has been fishing quite well under the birds if you can find them. Snapper and kahawai are the norm with the odd school shark thrown in just to add interest and change of taste on the table.
Try the ground between Tiri and Rakino Island if conditions permit as it can produce just about all year round. Live baiting for john dory is an option just about anywhere this time of year too.
Our day trips have been extended as we are doing abit more steaming than usual. Departure is around 7am and returning to Gulf Harbour at around 5pm. NO EXTRA COST!! It's still only $50 midweek and $55 weekends. And don't forget our stay-away trips from around $200 per angler for 3 days away!!
We can organise trips to meet your needs so give us a bell. See our page in the charter section under Auckland on this site.
