Fishing Reports
Get into Winter Fishing Mode.
So it's a bit colder. Wrap up warmer because alot of fishermen get their best fish in the colder months.
At present, we are fishing in the deeper areas of the Gulf (when weather and fuel companies allow!) and have really got into some excellent snapper and john dory in about 40m of water and deeper.
Flat Rock is usually at its best this time of year - a place where you have to know where to go since it's a huge area of foul. Big baits and plenty of patience. Drift fishing or the faithful old ledger rig are just some of the techniques we use to get the action happening.
Anchorite Rock is another one of our haunts when conditions permit, but I have little to report as the weather has let us down a bit of late and we've been fishing a little closer to home.
It can certainly fire on its day, even though it's only a small area of foul. Fish seem to hold just about all around the brick so have a good squiz around before you stop in one location. Try a drift or 2 if you run out of ideas.
On the way out, we don't hesitate to set up a drift under the birds (Gannets and Terns or sometimes even under the Mutton birds that are sitting on the surface)and often we end up staying in the area for the day as the resulting fishing can be red hot for hours at a time.
We are off to the Barrier in the next day or so and I shall post another report upon my return from this fishing wonderland. It is one of the best fishing areas in the country and over winter we spend quite a bit of time showing our clients the great fishing to be had.
Good luck to those in the 10kg Contest at Kawau this weekend. The forecast is looking rather rosey for a change.
SEA you then
