Wellington fishing report

January Fishing Diary

20.1.12 The albacore have started appearing in good numbers from makara up to Kapiti with fish up to 15kg caught over the last week. The water temp is up over 18 deg out west and 17deg out south. The trench is also worth a bash now for tuna. The trench has been a little quiet over the last couple of trips for us but the puka and xos teris are still going on the 100mtr mark. Fishermans is good on puka and the snapper fishing up and down the west coast is great. Surfcasters are catching moki with a 4kg one caught recently by Felix Wenzil. We had a good fish surfcast at Ngawi from the shore.

16.1.12 We have continued to see excellent hapuku, bluenose and bass fishing on the south coast and good hapuku on the west coast. The snapper fishing has been great off the West with the best one lately an 8.6kg fish caught by Shane Wratt at Pukerua bay on 23/12. There have been more kingfish caught at Oriental bay / Point Jenningham and quite a few seen in and around the harbour and out west. Last trip to the trench we saw 2 sperm whales and there have been sunfish seen at 5 mile reef. The harbour has been stacked with kahawai and more snapper continue to get caught around Ward Island, Point Gordan and Point Howard. After the big northerly blow the snapper and kingis should be in close and I wouldn’t be surprised if there are albacore tuna out of Mana and Kapiti and possible in Palliser bay.

9.1.12 We had some wopper bass, bluenose, tarakihi and puka at the Trench last Fri/Saturday. some nice limit bags of snaps have been caught on the west coast recently and we caught a 25lb kingi at homes rock on Saturday

5.1.12 The kingfish have started at Oriental bay with a nice 50lber caught landbased last week. Snapper are becoming more frequent in the harbour too. Out west its been snapper mayhem at a few spots. The trench continues to produce mega bluenose, especially on the outgoing tide. We've also had good numbers of puka, and hoki as well as some monster ling to 25kgs. Xos tarakihi and cod are still getting caught in the 80 mtre mark on the south coast.
