Bay of Plenty - "PURSUIT
Waihou Bay Update
This popular sportfishing destination has shown some real potential of late, superior to the rest of the Bay of Plenty. Not only has there been some good yellowfin fishing (average 25 – 30 kilos, sometimes 7 per boat) but marlin have also shown.
A 250kg blue was landed on January 9th with another lost at the boat. This follows small stripies being landed at both Whitianga and Tauranga. Additionally, large (500kg plus estimates) northern bluefin tuna have been seen two days in a row off the Ruakokou River. They were observed jumping 3 –5 metres high, presumably feeding. Anyone got some 60kg chain tackle?!?
Snapper of 14.6 and 15.6 kgs have also been landed recently. Joe Crowther of Auckland subdued a 34.6k thresher shark on 4k line for an easy NZ record at Cape Runaway.
Waihou Bay anyone?!? The season continues to get just a little bit more interesting all the while –bring it on!
