Epic Fishing Report - Big Winter Tairua and Whitianga Kingfish

Hi everyone

Winter is here and so are the big fish!  Time of put on the thermals, beanies and wet weather gear and get amongst it because the fishing this time of year is as good as ever, especially if a trophy fish is what you are after.

We've had plenty in that category grace the decks over the last few weeks action, with kingfish in the 20-30kg range the norm as fish of the day, especially when a big livie is dangled in front of their nose.

It has been interesting watching the change in the bite over the last month.  June was really what you would still consider winter fishing with all day bites the norm and the fish scoffing furiously to fatten up before the water cooled.  And man did they fatten!

The last few weeks as the water temp has plumetted however we've seen more of a bite time taking place, plenty of time you will see the fish on the sounder but they will keep their mouths shut, that being said you want to keep on them because when the fish chow down they are generally big and biting hard.  Over the last week that bite has been in the afternoon, but obviously tides and moon play a big factor here.

During these bites jigs are fishing very well and the White JM Alien and trusty JM Rocket have both been outstanding performers of late.  Work the fringes of the inshore reefs to find livies in the morning, they're always a good backstop if the fish turn their noses up to the metal and will often produce the fish of the day.  We've been getting some good fat kingfish in on the inshore bait grounds too, from Boat Harbour up to Opoutere.

Over the last week we've seen the first sign of roe and milt in the kingfish so thats a good sign that magic time of year where the fish come higher in the water column is just around the corner.

In the meantime if you want to nab one of our last available winter spots, check our calendar here

All the best
