Aon / Home Managers fishing comp report

Pete Lamb presents 7th annual 'AON - HOME MANAGERS' Fishing Competition

13, 14, 15th May (shore) and 20, 21, 22 May (boat) 2011In Association with SOUTHERN BAIT

Boat Section - 20, 21, 22nd May

We had almost 100 people fishing the boat section this year. 3 fish-able days with reasonable conditions. The forecast was 10 - 20 knot northerlies all 3 days but the actual conditions were not always that comfortable outside of the harbour.

Out West - it was pretty uncomfortable on Friday with 20-25knot onshore winds and a 1.5mtr NW swell. Saturday was much better but the fishing was a bit tough. Sunday was again pretty good with about 15knot - 20knot northerlies and no swell. There was a few snapper and trevally caught, a number of cod and teris and a small kingfish and rays bream. The hapuku fishing was pretty tough possibly due to the biggish tides. The 78mtr rise and the back of Hunters produced puka to 25kgs and I did hear of a 8kg snapper and 20kg kingfish caught, but alas these were by non-participating anglers.

South coast - the wind wasn't really a major issue but the 1 - 2mtr southerly swell mad it a bit rough on Friday and Saturday. Sunday was a good one weather wise and the bluenose, bluecod and tarakihi all came to the party. Hapuku fishing has been a bit more tricky but a 15kg fish and plenty in the 5-10kg were caught. I hear just inside Palliser bay has been reasonable hapuka fishing on 5-10kg fish recently.

Harbour - perfect weather and plenty of fish, especially for snapper, kahawai, gurnard and elephantfish. Who says the harbour is dead. Wellington Harbour is ON FIRE!!!

Jonathon Delich and his team had a great plan of cod/tarakihi on Friday, bluenose on Saturday and snapper on Sunday. His big snapper was one of the best two fish of the w/end and he came 2nd in the teams and tarakihi his team members catching the heaviest teri, 2nd heaviest kingi and the draw prize of the electric reel.

Steve brown and his team also had good plan going west for snapper trevs/kingis on the Friday, bluenose/tarakihi/cod on Saturday and in the harbour for snapper and elephants on Sunday. His team featured well in the species, team, trevally and elephantfish sections.

Craig Boyes had a great comp winning the most species and featuring in the bluenose, gurnard and sea perch sections.

Richard Horner won the puka and bluenose section and his bluenose was the co - best fish of the tournament.

Bill Jago did well from the Wairarapa in the kingfish/cod/teri sections.

The Tui most species and Southern Bait team sections were a real battle this year and a 3 way tie in the species was an amazing finish. Well done to all the kids and juniors who took part and thanks to their mums/dads/care-givers for taking them out.

Shore Fishing 13, 14, 15 May

We had about 60 people fishing this w/end including 15 kids and junior anglers. It was near perfect conditions for the harbour and south coast although windy and wet at times. With 25-35 knot northwesterlies and sometimes torrential rain, it wasn't ideal but it was certainly fishable and not too cold. Brock Beyer was the standout angler of the weekend featuring in the spotty shark, moki, red cod, most species and team sections. All the kids did well too catching a good variety of species. Next year watch out adults, these youngsters will be featuring more in the main section

Hard luck stories

Flynn Bellam lost a huge bluecod which was in his bag but managed to escape back into the water and swim away. His Dad said it was the biggest he had ever seen.

Jackie Lamb needed a kahawai to lead the species section. Everyone around her both days caught kahawai but alas not Jackie. She tried to the bitter end without success.
