I am still saying this has to be one of the best fishing seasons on record. We had an awesome spring with fantastic work up fishing out wide. During summer the Anchovies have moved right in to the harbor earlier than normal which has attracted all types of fish right in to our doorstep. I have seen Skipjack tuna, right in along the east coast bays which is a first for me. This just tells me how much feed in the form of baitfish schools have moved in to the Waitemata harbour.
The Kahawai and Small Kingfish are almost in plague proportions and I find myself moving away from the feeding fish in hope of our lures making it to the bottom so we can hook Snapper, which our main target onboard Wavedancer. It’s just a matter of getting away from the surface action a little on some days to get down to the Snapper action. Saying that however, we are sometimes catching Snapper in amongst all the activity and more often than not the snapper are way up off the bottom feeding with the Kahawai and Kingfish on masses of Anchovies. I believe Snapper do feed on live baitfish, which is why soft-baiting can be so effective for catching snapper. In peak summer we did experience a few slow days on the soft-baits where the bait fishoes were catching more, but not now soft-baits are slaying the fish.
The water temperature is now slowly falling which has set the Snapper into a frenzy. The past few days we have been getting limit bags in short order, in some full on frantic action packed sessions with multiple hooks ups being the norm. It’s a blast watching anglers laughing and hooting with people they have only just meet. Our crew days are a fantastic way to meet fellow fisher folk with a common interest, a few friendships have formed from our crew days which is a truly rewarding part of my job. Remember we do offer a free spot every month for those of you that have joined our mailing list; we draw a name out every month, so encourage your mates to join its free.
Autumn is approaching fast, and if spring and summer are anything to go by, the approaching work up season will be one out of the box. When the fish are moving out and feeding up for winter is the time to book a charter, don’t miss out on this it’s going to be a boomer time for action packed fishing. As the fish move in to the deeper water they start to feed on pilchards along with the dolphins, whales and our friends, the gannets. We are very lucky to have a good working relationship with the Dolphin Explorer captains who are out every day, they keep us up to date on what’s happening out in the deep. I always get excited when they text me saying where the work ups are happening, and its hammers down flying to the work up at 30 plus knots, It’s a sure way to get the adrenalin flowing. If you want to experience what I am predicting to be an amazing autumn, visit www.wavedancer.co.nz or call John on 021 564 669 to make a booking.
Those of you who have fished with us before already know we don’t count pennies onboard Wavedancer when it comes to how much fuel we burn, tackle and lures, we use the best gear we can find and that also includes lures. Our mission is to catch you fish no matter what it takes.
I have to mention again how deadly effective the new Zman scented lures are. We have tried all soft-baits available onboard Wavedancer and these ones are simply the best hands down. We have tested them many times now against other brands and they win, the fish catching ability is superior to other brands. There scent is made from 100% baitfish, not what some scientist has created in a lab….the scent is the real thing. Zman lures are super soft which gives them incredible action as well as being incredibly durable...they last and last and last. We don’t go through tubs of jerkshads anymore and we catch more fish. If you’re into using Jerkshad soft-baits I highly recommend you get yourself a few packets to give a try.
Lastly, we have had a number of parents requesting us to do a day to allow parents to take their kids fishing. Here is what we are planning... During the April School holidays, on Tuesday 19th, and Tuesday 26th, we will run a morning and an afternoon 4 hour fishing trip. The sessions will be both informative and fun, with all kids getting a free Wave Dancer cap, and the memory of their trip captured on camera. Cost for 1 parent and 1 child is $199.00. Email info@wavedancer.co.nz or call 021 564 669 to book.
That’s all for this month, Autumns just around the corner and its going to be a beauty...you know what to do.
Paul and John
