Fishing Reports

Whangaroa report

Well winter winds are here again at least for a couple of months, and while I've been out every fine day we've had it simply hasn't been many.

Hapuku are on the move into shallower water. Some have been caught in 70/80m, however I'm still fishing in 200m+ and there's some good fish out there and the gem fish are around too which is a welcome bycatch.

Still some bluenose around and again gem fish to be had in the same area. Run smaller hooks in these depths and you should score some good tarakihi.

Still some good kings around and we got some good ones last weekend including a previously tagged king! First one in 15 years of charter fishing and even better as I tagged this one 553 days ago,was caught on live bait by an Aussie client, and re-caught by one of my jigfishing clients.

The fish was fat as and in primo condition weighing in at 18.5kg. Another one was caught in the Cavallii Islands the same weekend  and it had been on the run for approx 2 years.

Snapper fishing has been running hot and cold, hopefully this will change and the tarakihi should be moving in closer. Had a bad run on sharks mauling kings, but the sharks seem to have moved on, but the barracouta are on the way in. The only plus with them is they make good bait. Watch the weather and stay safe out there.
