Bay of Islands - 'Major Tom II'

Winter may be here, but snapper fishing in the Bay has held up remarkably well. Although small "pirahna" sized snapper can be a nuisance, straylining with large hard baits has been proving productive for Hamish Faire on his new boat "Legend" in the area around Capstan Reef, and off the western end of Roberton.

Carl Pullan  on '4 Reel' also reports some good fish up to 8lb in the sandy area in 50M to the south of the Nine Pin, while we have had good mixed bags of terakihi and pan snapper around Onslow Rocks.

Kingfish continue to be highlight, and although the fish are not large, with an average size of around 9kg, all the reffs are holding good stocks of fish, though the bite may become more erratic as the waters continue to cool. The outer reefs are also producing plenty of snapper, so there is plenty of action available if the kingis are slow to come on the bite. We have taken some larger kingfish from 71M Reef when weather allows, and also some healthy bass on the outer reefs, but hapuka have been a bit evasive.

Hopefully  the erratic and rather windy conditions will ease before the broadbill start moving north on their spawning migration at the end of August.

As always, drop me an email at major.tom@xtra.co.nz if you have any queries
