Waikato Freshwater Report 30/11/00

All the streams and rivers in the region are producing fish at the moment. The only problem that we have had is consistancy with the weather. If you can hit the streams when it's fine the results are great, but when the wind is blowing it has been bringing rain and you may as well forget it. The tributaries of the Waipa river are going well and on fine days good dry fly fishing has been had. Mostly with attractor patterns such as Adams, Royal Wulf and Humphies. Run a small nymph 1m below the dry so that you are fishing sub surface also. The Waihou river system and joining streams are also producing good numbers of fish. Most of them are around 30cm in length but the numbers always make up for the lack in size. Earlier this week I had some great fishing on Okataina catching 15 fish in a few hours. I had to work pretty hard for the fish though. They were lying deep and there wasn't much in the way of surface activity. The key being changing flies every 20 min's. Just keeping different smelt patterns on the go all the time. The lake temperatures in the Rotorua region are down by a couple of degrees on the same time last year so fish haven't started smelting on the surface yet. It should only be a few weeks and it should all be happening. The King Country rivers are fishing well also. the rivers are all clear and have good flows of water at present. They seem to have benefited from the extra water a month ago. They are still running cold and the temperatures are still a little cool down south, so fishing the nymph is the best method for now. Just remember while our weather patterns are a little unsettled at the moment our summers are also getting later and it is possible to fish the dry fly right through to May, so tight lines and stay patient. Regards Mike.
