It's almost July and the year is racing away, it will soon be summer and we will be thinking about Dry Fly fishing. We have had some more rain, but it is still very very mild, most unusual for this time of the year and it surely means that we are going to get some real cold weather at some stage - maybe August and September. We have had reasonable amounts of rainfall, and we have been lucky enough to be able to fish quite happily without too much water.
The heavy rain that fell over last weekend affected the fishery as I wrote last week and the additional volume has taken quite a few days to ease. This weekend we got further rainfall but not enough to make a huge impact. Further rain overnight monday this week had eased today Tuesday and their is certainly a little extra volume and colour as a result in all the rivers.
Those that have fished over the past few days have had a mixed bag with some doing better that others just simply a matter of reading the conditions and fishing to them, Those that have fished wet have found that they have picked up good numbers of fish and those that have nymphed struggled at times esp on the Tongariro.
Additional rain pushes the fish out again and so it takes time to find where they are holding as the rivers ease the fish lies change and that can make it difficult if you have only a day or so to fish.
The smaller streams have fished consistently with fish continuing to move freely and anglers that have maintained contact have had good results. There has been little in the way of pressure as there is so much water to fish too and when the fish are holding sometimes it hard to make the choice of where to go.
River mouths have slowed a little not for any other reason than anglers have fished the rivers rather than the mouths and find that fishing at night as well is pretty full on. Those that are fishing the mouths are fishing inside and doing well.
Get onto the water and make the most of the conditions its early days yet and the results are great, good numbers of fish and most are in good condition which is a great sign for the fishery.
Boaties have enjoyed some really productive fishing over recent days with little wind and ideal conditions, both harling and leadling. We have so far had a very mild June and conditions have unusually good for boaties, with litlte wind.
Remember that its is 1st of July for our new season licences, they are available now. The next few days look as if we will be able to enjoy yet again some great results. Feel free to call for an update and for accommodation, 073868953 pete and stella
