Hi All!
While the weather gods have thrown everything at us lately there have been plenty of weather windows over the last month to enjoy some awesome winter fishing!
We've had both boats out chasing the fish down from Whitianga and Tairua and from the coastline to the deep reefs of the Mercs and Aldies there is some superb kingfish and snapper fishing to be had all round!
In terms of what is working you can't go past fresh bait and live bait. It is what has been working most consistently for us lately. Check out the last few days action on our site with live squid turning up a big 24kg kingfish in the shallows at the Aldies and bit cut mackeral baits turning up 8kg snapper from the deep. Loading up on bait isn't too much of an issue, there is plenty to be caught just out from Tairua and in the Mercury Bay.
In addition to the sabikis take some squid jigs with you and try to pop a few squid in the livie tank as well, they will get hit before anything else. Mackeral though are the staple and the kings are scoffing them big time.
All that bait has held some very nice kingfish in close, with skipper Tobes doing very well on the kingfish in the Bay when the wind has meant getting out wide isn't an option. He's also done very well recently at Great Merc on some nice big snapper, for more pics check out last weeks report here
Out wide the kingfish are still scoffing livies and jigs and we had an awesome weather window the week before last where we got two Cantabrians out into some sweet kingi action on both livies and jigs, with the biggest going 25kg. More on that in the Fishing.Net.NZ forum here
In terms of jigs the trusty favourites, the JM rocket and the Broken Arrow Green 300gm have been the best performers over the last week weeks.
If you are keen to get amongst the winter fishing action keep an eye on our calendar and get in touch if you're keen to get amongst the winter fishing action.
All the best
Carl and Tobes
