Hi Everyone
Well after a glorious run of weather for six months winter has finally shown its colours, nevermind, it signals big fish time on the Eastern Coromandel.
If the last month is anything to go by it should be a blinder.
We've had a great run of kingfish in the 20kg - 30kg range recently, and with plenty of bait around there should be some even better fish as the water cools and the fish congregate out in the deep.
Last week we had Daiwa out from Japan doing some product testing and on their first day they had a blinder on Daiwa jigs with multiple hook ups the norm and a 50 fish day on their first day, all of which were released.
There were some big fish to 28kg taken on jigs on a recent week long trip with some visiting Australia guests (pics here) , the best fish coming on green and gold patterns.
More often that not though, livebait has been more consistent that jigs, anything from mackeral, to kahawai and trevally getting hit, make sure the livie tank is loaded as they dissapear pretty quick.
Te Aroha legendary fisherwoman Wilma Robinson won her local Grand Tavern competition with a 30kg kingfish caught on a livebait, and was smashed off earlier on what looked like a bigger fish. Check out more pics from that day here
Most of the pins around the Aldermen Islands have been firing with a lot of the
action still in closer to the Aldies at the moment, the G Spot, in behind the Aldies has produced a nice line of kingfish lately, and with water temps still up for this time of year there is still some good action in close along the coastline.
It was only a few weeks ago that we had a striped marlin feeding beside the boat and with saurie and other baitfish still around in good numbers there has to be the odd marlin still lurking around.
We're into prime snapper time and any reef from the coast to the deep at moment you can't go wrong, fresh dead baits are the way to go at the moment.
If you are keen to get amongst the action check out our calendar for an available date, get in touch on our website and we'll get you amongst it
