Fishing Reports

wellington update

May Update from Pete Lamb Fishing.

WEST COAST

The snapper are still firing on the west coast with good catches reported over the last 2 weeks. We caughht 6 to 15lb on the sth end of Mana recently and a client caught 12 to 15lb at Pukerua bay last w/end. The Hapuka continue to be caught off the back of mana, hunters and makars in good numbers and sizes. David Hoda caught a 72lber on Melicent recently. Fishermans has been a bit inconsistent but is worth a crack for puka, kingis, warehou and big cod over the next 2 months.

SOUTH COAST

Nicolsons Trench has been great for bluenose on this side as well as a few nice puka from time to time. XOS teris and bluecod have been good off the Turakerei to Baring head stretch. We had a god catch at 5 mile reef recently. 80 - 100mtrs is the depth for the big cod, teris and school puka. Me mate steve caught 2 x kingis in 80mtrs while tarakihi fishing last w/end - 25 and 35lb.

HARBOUR

Kahawai have been in good numbers all round the coast and in the harbour. Snapper continue to get caught in the harbour too. Eastborne and Evans bay have been the places to go recently. Ive heard of good tarakihi fishing off the wreck and off point gordon. Gurnard fishing at the entrance is good.

SURFCASTING

after a few nice kingis and snapper a month ago things have gone a bit quieter. Plenty of Spotty Sharks and some good blue moki are stil present but I rekon there is still a good chance of a munta snap or king b4 the season is out.

25.4.10

We did a couple of good sounds trips last week with nice puka, bluecod and tarakihi fishing despite not always perfect conditions. locally we had some excellent tarakihi, bluecod and kahawai fishing in the leigh of mana island with trevs, bluemackerel and octipus also in the catch. the trench was quiet on saturday with a few bluenose, puka, rays bream caught. karori was good to us in the bluecod dept and we caught a nice trumpeter as well as teris on the way home.

17.4.10

The weather looks half decent this w/end in Wgtn. northerlies picking up to 20 knots satirday then dying out in evening picking up again sunday afternoon. have a good one, we'll be out at the trench and over in the sounds on our 2 boats.

12.4.10

The west coast was a bit quite fri/sat with good puka to 20kg + and snapper to 8.5kgs but many reported tough fishing. Nicolsons trench went really good with plenty of puka, bluenose and rays bream over the previous few days. We had a great Saturday - after catching a dozen rays bream near the surface on the bluenose baring head spot, we saw a sperm whale and then got into some nice puka, bluenose and tope to 20kgs. Fri/Sat produced excellent bluecod and tarakihi fishing off turakerei with fish iup to 3kg both days.

Plimmerton fishing comp - heaviest fish - snapper 8.2kg, puka 13.5kg, albacore tuna (2 caught) 5.5kg, tarakihi 1.6kg, bluecod 3.2kg

Surfcasters should revel in a calm sth coast and venture over the wairarapa to such places at ocean beach, whangamoana, white rock and flat point. Wainui beach may be good for spotty shark and moki and there are plenty of big kahawai around on the sth coast at present. gurnard, bluecod and tarakihi should also be present as the water cleans up.

7.4.10

The fishing has been going off, when people have been able to get out. Plenty of snapper arpound on the west coast from Ohau point northwards. Some really good sized ones are now starting to appear. Jimmie the fish reported 6 fish caught over 20lbs off te-horo recently, all were put back. Mat Nolan landed a 30kg kingfish from hunters bank last week, his personal best. THe puka have been firing off fishermans, makara and off the back of mana. we have had fish up to 30kgs in the last 2 weeks. The trench is still going well with the other side a bit mroe consistent especially on xos bluenose. We have had fish up to 20kgs most of the last 5 trips over there. inshore fishing is great for tarakihi on the west and the sth coasts as well as bluecod in the usual haunts. we have done well recently off turakerei, karori, makara and mana.
