Fishing ReportsWellington Freshwater Report 25/10/00A sombre note this month I'm afraid, the Tararua's rivers really have been wiped out with the recent record rain levels. The upper Waingawa and Ruamahunga catchments look as if a bulldozer carrying thousands of ton's of gravel has gutted a highway down the valleys.
All holding water and I seriously mean all, in the upper sections have been wiped out completley, no boulders bigger than the size of pea's remain, and nymph life is non-existant. the fish that have survived, very few of them are in a bad way, some fish just wafting in the margins scrambling for any hint of food! They will feed avidly in the coming months on teresstrials I'm betting. It will take several years for these rivers to recover.
The Wainui is fishing well to nymph in the riffles with a few starting to take dry's on hot days. Nothing else much to report this month, the Hutt, Otaki and other streams are still in recovery mode and carrying milky water from slips in the headwaters.
I fished Kourau Dam the other day with no success, the water was very dity too, but I have heard of some fish falling to Midge in the evenings.
Pick of water for the coming few weeks . . . get out and explore Taupo and Hawkes Bay, our rivers have had a serious pounding and will take some time to recover and produce fish with regularity. Hopefully next report will be on a happier note!
