Fishing Reports

Best Western Braeside Resort Rotorua

Well look behind you, that was summer, this could well be the last of Awahau and Hamurama with the lake ready to cool off. But as in the past years, an awesome summer, smaller fish seem to have the best condition, not so with the larger ones.

There have been good numbers of brown trout up to 4kg being taken at the mouth of the Waitete. One fisherman reported he had caught eight such browns in the past week. There has also been good numbers of fish reported in the Waitete and Ngongotaha streams. Right now is probably an excellent time to try out some of those flies that have been sitting in your fly box unused for the year, you may be pleasently surprised with the results.

At the moment the Trout pools is a great place to try the dry fly, as there have been some excellent rises, so get their before this stops, also try a mayfly nymph.

Tarawera has had good catches reported, trolling. Jigging has had the best results, using small smelt patterns such as Jack Spratt and Grey Ghost. If thinking of a fly fish, Rangiuru Bay is a good option.

There is alot of surface movement at Okataina, with small numbers of fish cruising the shallows. The Green Orbit and Jack Spratt have shown good results.

Rotoiti has continued to fish well, mainly jigging but also trolling 15-18 colours of leadline. Again the fish are in excellent condition.

From now on you can expect to see an increase in the catch rate at the Ohau Channel as the lake begins to cool. Heavy rain will assist this process.

This winter will also give a better indication as to the success of the Rotoiti diversion wall. Lets hope the results are favourable.

Cheers Doug and Malcolm
