Fishing Reports

The Store report for Feb 22-28

Well the rain has gone and the humidity that we have been subjected to over the past 10 days or so has certainly eased which is great. We have some great weather forecast over the next few days, sunny, mild and windless, which is just what we want.

We have had a good deal of pressure throughout the fishery recently, more so than last year when the world wasn’t too sure what was happening and many of the overseas anglers decided to stay closer to home. For those of us that enjoy the fishery many have returned to enjoy a great resource and even more so this summer.

Rivers are at this point quite low and clear as the lake has dropped away with the lack reasonable rain and with that the fishing eases somewhat. Still we have had a number of colder mornings and evenings which has meant that there has been a little bit of movement of the fish.

Fish are holding in the bubbly water and those that have fished to the conditions be it dry,wet or nymph have certainly done well. The Tongariro is holding more fish, bigger volume and the cooler water temperatures are favouring the river at present.

Lake fishing is still a little hard to read with the fish deep almost below 40-45 mtrs which means that it’s the down-riggers, and steel lines and jiggers who are doing best at present. Bright flies, be Red and or Gold and Silver and traditional smelts are working best.

River mouths are slow with mornings where we have a drop in barometric pressure encouraging a few fish in, but generally quieter.

Feel free to give us a call for an update or accommodation anytime,
