Fishing Reports

Best Western Braeside Resort Rotorua

Looking at Okataina, Tarawera and Rotoiti, all three lakes have produced some nice fish. Trolling with Spotty Gold Tasmanian Devil, Pretty Fish and Bright Pink, to name a few. Trout up to 3kg have been recorded.

Rotoiti is still the main jigging lake, though the numbers are somewhat reduced. Trout to 4kgs have been reported, most flies have been successful with Pat Swift pre tied jig traces proving most popular both in light and medium patterns.

All attention is on Awahau and Hamurana with black clouds of fish near the mouths, holding in different spots depending on the wind. Most flies are working, streamers and well as nymphs. A lot of small and medium size rainbows with some larger brown still present.

Something of interest to note, is this week the Ohau Channel has started fishing again. This is at least one month early which is a bonus.

Okareka and Rerewhakaaitu are still fishing with a large number of Australian visitors favoring these lakes with mixed success. Spinning is gaining popularity with the veltex spinners most successful. A few fly fisherman have even been seen spinning.

There are some good results from the Ngongotaha and Waitite, but with recent rain it has been a bit difficult. Smelt patterns near the mouth in conjunction with a nymph have had some success.

At most lakes drifting off weed beds has also had reasonable success.

Cheers Doug and Malcolm.
