Hi All!
It has been a while since we popped one of these reports up....
It hasn't been for a lack of fishing, quite the opposite, it would have to be the best spring seasons on record, with a great stretch of days on the water due to some awesome weather and top fishing to match.
Since our last report in late September we've had more kings in the magic 30-35kg mark, the latest coming just last week caught by Brad Burden, a king estimated at 32kg which was released to fight another day, caught on a Zest Super Deep jig in Blue and Green.

October and November saw some amazing days with quadruple hook ups of consistently big fish. Things have slowed a fraction as the kings have started spreading out but there is still some good action to be chased.
The kingis are now spread out from the Aldies right into the coast and harbour (prior to the weekends floods anyway!) and have predominantly been feeding on squid right through the Bay of Plenty.
We had the privilege the other day of seeing an ink covered ocean as a school of a hundred plus kingis around Slipper Island smashed up a bunch of squid they had herded up into the shelter of the boat - just awesome, no time to catch it on camera just time to stand there gobsmacked and take it all in - and then chuck some jigs into the action!
Most of the reefs close to home are now worth a prospect with a jig, livebait or even popper.
There are no shortage of rat kingis around but work through them and you'll find there are some whoppers lurking too!
With the kings feasting on squid, live squid is probably a good bait of choice too ;-) otherwise a likely jig, 200gm seems to be plenty big enough and a popular choice of scoffing amongst the big boys.
I'd put the water and kingi action about a month behind what is was last year so it could be a wee while before any marlin venture into our neck of the woods but with all the bait around and the water starting to warm it can't be long and there are plenty of alberts around to keep anyone wanting to prospect interested.
As for the snapper, we had an awesome run over both shallow and deep foul for the last few months but that seems to have slowed with most fish out over the sand at the moment. There are plenty of terakihi around the usual haunts at Boat Harbour and Slipper, and the odd pup puka in reasonably shallow foul as well.
Not long til Christmas now, so if we don't put up another report before then, have a good one and a safe time on the water!
Cheers
Carl Muir
