The Double Rum Diary: 10-11th October 2009

If you get amongst the work ups of dolphins, whales and kahawhi the snapper pounce on anything that moves at the moment.

The snapper are mainly males and we have to go some distance to find the workups.

Saturday 10th

This last Saturday, the 10th, was rough but our guests kept at it and came back with an excellent haul of snapper. There were a good number over 8lb and 5 fish over 10 lbs plus quite a few pannies. They also kept the 15 or so Barracuda they picked up for smoking.

We went out past Kawau in the direction of the Hen & Chicks. The boat took a hammering but that is what we are designed for and luckily the wind died down about 4pm so the trip back to Gulf Harbour was easier than expected.

Sunday 11th

Came across a good sign inside Kauwau and picked up 20 good pannies first up. Not as big as the day before but a nice way to check out the gear, get a feel for the day and a few in the bin.

As the conditions were much better than the previous day we decided to find whales which we came across outside Flat Rock on the way to Little Barrier.

Conditions were near perfect. No work ups happening. Decided to fish on Five Mile Reef. Fishing was slow but steady. Biggest snapper was caught by the Skiipper , Garry ,with his first and only try. A 14 lber.

The fishing club we took out had a very enjoyable session bringing back in total 20 very nice snapper.

Back to Gulf Harbour at 4pm for a wash down and a few beers to celebrate a good weekend in the deep.
