Fishing ReportsTaupo Fishing Report 30/9/00The last blast of winter earlier in the week was good for Taupo flyfishers. Fresh runs of fish entered all of the Rivers flowing into the Lake. In particular the Tongariro and Tauranga-Taupo rivers fished very well. In general angling pressure has reduced making it easier for anglers to fish their favourite water.
At the time of writing this report all rivers are low and clear. Anglers having most success are fishing natural patterns of fly such as Hare and Copper, Pheasant Tail, and the Black Nymph. Smaller sizes of Champagne coloured Glo Bugs have been productive in the early morning.
Night fishing at the river mouths has been good but a large number of the fish caught have been recovering from spawning.
Some smelt action has been had around the Acacia Bay and Whakamoenga Pt areas. This is very early and bodes well for the season to come.
Out on the Great Lake fishing continues to improve. Harling morning and evening has been good. Most consistent areas for harling are 5 Mile Bay, Horomatangi Reef and Rangatira Pt. Best flies are Green Orbit, Taupo Tiger Green, Jack Spratt and Yellow Lady.
During the day fish are being caught using leadline rigs or downriggers set to about the 30 meter depth. Areas fishing well through the day are Hatepe, Horomatangi Reef, Kaipo Bay and Whakaipo Bay.
Best lure colours are Orange and Gold, Traffic Light, Spotty Gold and the Yellow and White.
October 1st is opening day on the Rotorua lakes and other rivers around the country such as the upper Mohaka and Rangataiki. In the Taupo District Lakes Otamangakau and Kurutau open on this day also. The upper Taupo rivers remain closed until December 1st.
