Fishing ReportsTaupo Fishing Report 12/10/00Another week of unsettled weather has further frustrated fly fishers in the Taupo district. Earlier in the week rivers began to clear and fished very well with a mixed bag of fresh fish and kelts being caught. Pick of the rivers were the Tongariro, Waimarino and Tauranga-Taupo. However during the latter part of this week more rain fell in the catchments further discolouring all rivers except the Waitahunui. Anglers enjoying the most success are nymphing larger pattern of Glo Bugs in the brighter colours and also at times when rivers are high, wet line fishing. Best of the wet flies are the Red Setter, Olive Woolly Bugger and the Green Fuzzy Wuzzy.
Opportunities for the fly fisher still exist when the rivers are dirty on Lakes Otamangakau and Rotoaira. Both Lakes have fished well over recent weeks. Best shoreline opportunities are to be had on Otamangakau with the inlet canal fishing well and also some good fish being caught around the Lake margins.
Out on the Lake, fishing has been best during the early morning period. Harling has been productive using smaller Cobras or flies. Best lure colours have been Spotty Gold, Yellow and White and the Pink. Most productive patterns of fly have been Yellow Lady, Green Orbit and the Green Taupo Tiger.
During the day fish have been caught down as deep as 25 meters using a variety of deep trolling methods. Best lure colours used trolling have been Orange and Gold, Spotty Gold and the Leopard. Much of the Lake fishing this week has again been limited to the area inside Rangatira Pt but when conditions have allowed some good fishing has been had at Hatepe, Horomatangi Reef and Mine Bay.
