Epic Adventures Mid Winter Report

 HI Everyone

Well we're right smack bang in the middle of winter and the water I hope has reached its low point as far as temperature goes, sitting now at 12 degrees.

In fact so low that we struck a very rare catch at the Alderman Islands yesterday - a Slender Tuna caught on softbait!

As far as I can tell, these are predominantly a South Island fish, but judging by our catch and the sign we have been seeing on the sounder lately there are a few of these tuna around in our northern waters!

KINGFISH

There are still some big kingis around and the last week has seen a few over the magic 20kg mark, including Skirmantal Saltis with a beaut 23kg kingfish pictured here, caught on a Zest Blue Mackeral jig.

The other hot jig during the peak hours of sunshine has been the Blue Katch1 spear jig, one that we have  made sure is in the mix over the last few weeks as it was the kingi's favourite jig this time last year .

The months of August, Sept and October will see some hot action with the kingfish hitting feeding mode as we come into Spring, and a few spots last year produced some awesome popper fishing with kingis feeding for hours right up on the surface.  If you are keen to mix up some popper, jigging and livie action over this time then get in touch!

SNAPPER

We've had some good snapper bites lately, Shark Alley at the Alderman Islands netted us a very nice line of snapper on 7" Gulp baits recently in 15m of water, and Pauanui Point produced a very nice line of fish on fresh kahawai bait, for one of our straylining sessions recently.  It took me back a little bit to what really got me hooked on fishing out of here all those years ago!

There is nothing like a burley trail on a still dusky evening and a snapper peeling line underneath your thumb before you engage the drag!  And with the snapper back in the shallows it is the perfect time to get into some of this action!

All the best

Carl Muir
