Wellington update

105 lb hapuku caught on Melicent at Fishermans rock 5.5.09.

There have been plenty of puka out at the trench lately with heaps of rays bream and a few bluenose, tope and ling.

If you havent caught rays bream before then try dropping a jig or small baits down 20 - 50mtrs down while your fishing at the Trench. We have been catching 30 + tarakihi size r.b's while deepwater fishing lately. It's great fun and they fight hard and taste good.

We have had a few good catches of snapper on the sth end of mana and at boom in the last week. John dory, xos trevally and warehou have also featured in the catch.

Fishermans has been feast and famine on the puka. good one day, poor the next. Its a great time for a xos kingis at fishermans or hunters on the long jig or livebait. We caught a couple of albacore last w'end and there are rumours about a small yellowfin being caught on our west coast a month or two ago.

You might have seen the article in NZ Fishing News about a 60kg butterfly tuna caught at Lake Ferry by a surfcaster earlier in the year. it makes interesting reading.

The latest sounds trip was great with puka to 51lb, plenty of snapper, tarakihi and bluecod

There has been a good run of tarakihi by surfcasters in evans bay recently and trevally on the sth coast and on the eastern side of the harbour.
