Mercury Bay Report Infinity Charters 19/11/00
Fishing has been very good around the Mercury Islands since the new season started on July 1. Indeed on that very first day a kingfish of 17.8kg was caught on 6kg tackle at Centre Is. just out of Whitianga. Snapper up to 12kg have been weighed in during the spring and good hapuku fishing has been enjoyed by anglers venturing east and north of Cuvier Is. Tarakihi are more plentiful than usual which is a real bonus.
The weather has been very changeable with strong winds often limiting choices of fishing spots. Sea surface temperature charts show that it will be a while yet before gamefish start appearing in our waters. The good news is that baitfish are plentiful so local skippers are hopeful of a good season.
On a personal note, the “Infinity” team was rapt to win the top Whitianga gamefishing charterboat trophy last season. The boat was out of the water during September for a refit during which the saloon was greatly enhanced and the accommodation radically improved. October was our best month yet for fishing and we look forward to the summer expectantly.
