Fishing Reports

as good as it gets

Its really firing out there at the moment. John had a good day on 62ft Daniel at the trench yesterday with bass to 65lb and good bluenose. The previous trip out there yielded plenty of puka and the tuna should be turning up soon if they're not already there. The West Coast has been amazing with puka and some really big ones are now starting to show with a 60, 70 and 75lber caught in the last week on Melicent.

A nice alby caught of the back of mana last week.

The albacore tuna have been going ballistic off the back of Mana and at fisherman's rock. Most charters have been catching a fish per person before or after going puka fishing. Go out and sample a heap of fun before they disappear for warmer waters. There are heaps of them 1 - 2 miles off the back of Mana right now - you cant miss!. We have been trolling skirted lures at 8 knots but they seem to be taking baits, jigs, SWF and eating berley too if you want to use bait. Ian Marshall caught one on SWF the other day and Graeme the diver is out today trying to spear one.

The snapper fishing is as good as it gets up and down the west coast. Our best results have been at Makara recently but I have heard of big fish caught at the bridge and numbers of fish at Pukerua bay and Boom.

John with a 15lb snap caught at the fenceline recently

Kahawai are fattening up prior to spawning and there are some real 'horses' around. We got one at 3.8kgs the other day. We're getting great trevally fishing too at present - much better that the last few seasons. Dont forget the humble tarakihi also bluecod and the less common John dory. Most days we are getting kingfish encounters and landing the odd one or two. Dan Cook landed a 30kg kingi at Hunters recently. Get those long jigs and livebaits going and you wont be disappointed!

Surfcasters continue to catch spotty sharks, a few snapper and moki fairly regularly. One angler caught 6 moki on the w/end and another a 1.5kg snap. There have also been kingfish to 8kgs and snapper to 12kgs caught off the shore in Wgtn over the last month

The w/end weather still has not been all that good this season with most w/ends wind or bad forcasts.
