Fishing Reports

fishing in wellington

Things are really hotting up now with good catches and warm weather, all we need is a bit less wind and it will be paradise. We have had good numbers of snapper, bluenose, tarakihi and puka with a few kingfish and trevally thrown in to the mix in recent charters. Here's a run down of the fishing around wgtn.

Nicolsons Trench - (deepwater fishing)

The bluenose have been in good numbers on this side of the trench particularly on the outgoing tride. Puka have also been good off Turakerei head this season. Hoki have been abundant too all over the place with a few gemfish thrown oin for good measure. Bass fishing on the other side of the trench has been good on the turn of the tide but not in as regular as last season. I cant wait for the temp to rise above 17 degrees as the albacore turn up.

Inshore south coast

Its a good time for big teris and cod at 5 mile reef with the odd puka - try fishing 60 to 70 metres anchored up through the turn of the tide with berley. there have been some big schools of warehou reported out from island bay in 50 - 80mtrs

Wairarapa

Plenty of pauas and crays around plus the usual puka, trumpeter, xos teris and bluecod for boaties. there have been a few snapper caught in Palliser bay. last year the spit produced some great snapper, so that must be a go for surfcasting over the next few months.

Wgtn Harbour

Good numbers of kahawai around somes island and the harbour entrance, a few kingis are now present around barrets reef, pencarrow rocks and around the wharves. snapper have been caught along the eastborne/ward isl bank and in evans bay. the gurnard are running best from eastborne to pencarrow and falcons shoal is a go for teris and bluecod.

West Coast - (inshore)

There are snapper galore up and down the coast now with hotspots like pukerua big bay, boom, makara fenceline, sth of bears head, sth end of mana. Ive heard of some good kingi action at hunters recently. plenty of big fish over 50lb too.
(deepwater) Fisherman's rock has been hot for puka and a big mako was hanging around recently having a free feed of puka

Kapiti

Nice kingis and snapper being caught in the normal haunts - airplane isl, nth end of kapiti, on the sand in 30mtrs out from waikanae.
pukerua bay is producing plenty of snapper and gurnard on the sand 10 - 25mtrs

Marlborough Sounds

Our time in the sounds is always magical, plenty of bluecod, puka, tarakihi with the odd trumpeter, snapper and warehou. The crays and scallops have been marvelous. The puka on the sounds side the the strait have been on average bigger with many over 50lbs

Surfcasting

The blue moki fishing continues to be good on the south coast. gurnard are in good numbers at white rock and castlepoint. spotty sharks are still the most consistent quality fish (crab bait). school snapper and the odd biggie are being caught in evans bay (cobham dr, greta point, miramar and flat point) and off oriental bay.

LBG

A few small kingis have been caught at in the harbour recently and a couple of kingis to 10kg at boom. no big kings reported yet but it should be perfect time at the usual haunts - boom, castlepoint, wire rock and the wharves.
