Location & Conditions
Over the Christmas / New Year period we have been hitting the outside of Great Barrier pretty hard. Weather for boating has been excellent. We have been diving & fishing coming up with some big crays and catching some Tuna and Marlin. The snapper fishing has been too easy with many days seeing us picking up 10-15lb snapper. Had some nice hook ups on Marlin 15 miles east of Arid nothing landed but lost a great deal of gear. However have hit and kept big Albacore Tuna plus Skip Jacks which we are trolling for up close in our wake. Fantastic fun to play these basics on our light snapper gear. The small Makos in the Hauraki Gulf mixed with Hammer Heads are everywhere. One day we counted 30 on the surface. We have seen huge sharks out past Rosalie Bay and Cape Barrier. I mean huge sharks.
Notes
A concern to note is back in Auckland the algae Red Blooms are huge this year. It stretches from Pakiri right through to Gulf Harbour and out to Ancorite, mixed with white jelly fish 5 – 8 millimeters in width. It makes fishing here in a soup, it is damn awful but further out the water visibility is 20 mtrs, not bad for this time of year. The snapper still have not dropped their roe yet. We have been waiting since November. This is another concern.
