Fishing Reports

First Weekend in December

Friday 5th December

Location & Conditions
Kawau with 9 guests. Flat calm - 5 knot variable northerly wind came up mid afternoon, no swell.

Baits, methods & results
Big baits , 2 pilchards at a time. 4oz ball sinkers attached to size 10 hooks with a keeper hook size 7 directly to the main line. Caught plenty of big fish 45 - 60 cm. The snapper were not attacking the baits as in previous days but sucking on them and the trick was when you felt a slight sniff set the hook . A lot came up with fine lip hook ups. Big fights into the current.

Notes
For the little boats who wish to fish in our burly trail .That is not the way to achieve results and if we can cast into your boat you are way to close ......... be fair. When you are fishing 30 meters plus in a current it is a waste of time burling on the surface. You need to drop your burley pots to where the fish are.

Saturday 6th December

Location & Conditions
Left early morning from Gulf Harbour went up to south of Kawau.

Baits, methods & results
Early on from 9am to 11.30am it was slow and steady results. Big fish came in, 45 - 50 cm average. Some nice Mako shark hook ups plus one massive stingray . A lot of fun. We used big baits / ledgers and soft's all with nice steady results. At 11.30am it went dead for the next 31/2 hours. We went out to Flat Rock , drifted, anchored, tried everything to encourage bites, no action other than a black angle fish. Then at 3.30pm it came back on. We even caught a nice Hapuka at Kawau plus some really nice snapper, 14 lbs was our largest.

Notes
Great day out.
