Fishing ReportsBraeside Resort Fishing ReportThe recent settled weather has given every angler the opportunity to fish their favourite spot without being hindered by wind and rain. All areas have been productive for everybody whether boat fishing or casting a fly from the shore or in the numerous streams and rivers.
Last week the Rangitaiki River was running high and the water was coloured however this has changed dramatically and the river level has dropped back to the same level as it was over the summer. This area is not receiving a great deal of angling pressure at present, I don’t know if this is due to the falling temperatures or the rising fuel prices as I do understand it can be a bit of a journey for some anglers to reach this stunning fishing location.
For those anglers fishing this area the outstanding nymph patterns at present are the light and dark scruffy. Also if you are fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time and get the sun on some of these sections of the river you may be duly rewarded with some very exciting dry fly action even at this late stage of the season. The outstanding dry is the March Brown. This area requires a forestry permit which can be obtained at the main office of Independent Security Consultants at 66 Tarewa Rd. The office is open Monday to Friday from 8-30am to 5pm. For any related enquiries their phone number is 07- 347-8880.
Moving closer to Rotorua the Ngongotaha Stream has been the focus for many anglers whether fishing the mouth or the mid section or the top end, anglers have been rewarded with good catches of well conditioned fish. The recent rain has inspired a large number of rainbows and browns to move up this stream to prepare for spawning. These browns prefer to hold in the deeper pools of the stream and will present a challenge to most anglers wishing to land a trophy fish.
Normally by this time of the year the ever faithful glo bug is the main pattern but this year it seems that a weighted nymph such as a Hare and Copper or Prince nymph, combined with a Grey Ghost is the winning combination.
The Waiteti and Utahina streams are both holding good numbers of fish but are not receiving the same degree of angling pressure as the Ngongotaha stream so these streams are a good option if you prefer to take a more relaxed and laid back approach to your fishing.
