Fishing Reports

Bay of Islands -'Major Tom II'

Although marlin are still being caught off the coast, a great deal more effort has gone into kingies over the last few weeks.

Some good fish have been caught, especially on live piper , right in at Tapeka Point, with boil ups reported from other close in locations. The attraction seems to be  the recovery of piper schools within the Bay's shallows, and these are also attracting plenty of kahawai.

Kingies have also been plentiful at Rocky Point, 71 Meter Reef and Waiwiri Rock, but no really big fish have turned up yet, with the Swordfish Club's pin standing at just 17.3kg. This is likely to change over the next month, especially with the fishing effort from the Internation Yellowtail Tournament in June.

Snapper action is a bit more erratic as the water starts to cool, although some good catches of pannies are coming from soft bottom areas from Black Rocks through to the Nine Pin. The biggest of the snapper are being caught at dusk close in to the rocks, which is usual as we move into winter.

Very few terakihi as yet, and hapuka have been steady, without being prolific.

The few boats out chasing marlin are still reportin reasonable action, with the best areas seeming to be from Stephensons islands through to Mt Camel, and Home Point through to Whangamumu. Most of the catching seems to be inside the 200M contour.
