Fishing Reports

The Store Report for May 12-19

Good morning. A very cool start to the week with frosts (which are early for this time of the year) and cooler air temperatures. I am sure the scientists will call it Global Warming, but its still just a pattern that we have had before and will no doubt have again!

This winter is going to be a wetter, cooler & snowier and hopefully the fish, a little more prolific. At this stage we have had lots of rain over a period of a couple of weeks and only now are the rivers finally back to their normal flows.

All the rivers are in excellent condition with good volume and colour, there are fish that have moved around the river but I dont think that there are lots of fish. Many that were in the rivers when the rain fell have washed out and fish are begining to move into the rivers again but in smallish numbers.

Most of the fish are smaller but in great condition with the majority of fish just being legal size which is what we expected this season, though I am sure that there are a number of reasonable fish that are larger.

The rivers all of which have received lots of rain have sustained some changes but they are mainly good ones, with much of the debris that was a hang over of recent years being washed out and leaving quite clean lies.

Get your gear together and get onto the water and take advantage of the fishing because there isn't much pressure this time of the year and it's always a comfortable time weatherwise to fish.

The big river has a lot of water and at times is hard to read. There are lots of anglers concerntrating on certain lies in the lower parts of the river, with many pools in the upper reaches getting little pressure but well worth fishing. Wind has been a pain at times on the Tongariro but it's a matter of finding a spot thats a little more sheltered. Wet liners certainly have done better than most as to be expected.

River mouths, great rips and a higher lake level will make a difference to those that are keen to fish off the drop offs, game at the moment with the minus temps at night and early morning, the rising barometic temp should push a few fish our way.
