Braeside Resort Fishing Report

The 2008 World Fly Fishing Championships came to a successful end last week with our New Zealand team finishing extremely well in second place. The Kiwis were leading the competition at the end of the second day however the Czech team beat the New Zealanders in the final two sessions of the third and last day resulting in a gold medal for the Czech team and silver for the Kiwis. The top placed individual angler was Martin Deoz of the CzechRepublic and the highest placed individual New Zealander was Des Armstrong who finished in sixth place.

The number of fish that were landed and released by individual anglers in a three hour sessions shows us the high skill level these anglers have attained. The highest number of fish landed and released in a three hour session was thirty seven, this was achieved by two separate anglers, Ivica Magdic from Croatia and Yann Caleri of France. This feat was accomplished on the WaimakiririRiver however the Whanganui and Waihou rivers also had anglers achieving high catch rates.

The two lake sessions held on Otamangakau and Rotoaira were a little more challenging for anglers with the highest catches being sixteen and ten respectively. All fish landed were measured and the longest fish came from LakeOtamangakau measuring 689mm.

Anglers and organisers were very pleased with the success of the event and the quality of the fishing that was available to them. Many of these international anglers now move on to the HawkesBay to compete in the Commonwealth Fly Fishing Champs while others are returning home to prepare for the next World Champs which are to be held in Scotland in 2009

In conjunction with the World Fly Fishing Championships the first New Zealand Open Fly Tying Champs were held. This event was open to all competing anglers and the general public. Jarkko Suominen of Finland was the overall winner however Jacob Bond a ten year old boy from LakeRotoma surprised everybody with his amazing fly tying skills which landed him a commendation from the judges. This event will now be run annually in conjunction with the New Zealand National Fly Tying Champs.

The next event on the fishing calendar for anglers who enjoy fishing at a less competitive level is the Rotorua Classic Tagged Trout Tournament. This event is run by the Rotary Club of Rotorua North and all proceeds will be donated to the Rotorua Coastguard and Education Scholarships. The competition will be held on LakeRotorua on April 19th and 20th.

There will be twenty specifically tagged trout released into the lake prior to the event and these are the trout that every competitor will be trying to catch over the weekend. Entry forms can be obtained from www.taggedtrout.co.nz and is open to the first 500 entrants and entries received before April 7th will be eligible for the early bird prize draws.
