Howdy All
It doesn't seem overly appropriate to have put winter in the title really, as we currently have some of the best, bluest water we have seen all year, and it is mid-April! 20.5 degree water is pushed right in close to Shoe Island at the moment and freedivers around the Aldermen Islands over the weekend reported electric blue warm water.
There are plenty of marlin around too! We saw a couple in a couple of hours jigging yesterday, one wide of the Aldies which cruised right past the boat mocking us (lesson learnt: don't put the lures away just yet!) and the other on our way back in, in 60m of water. There have been plenty of hook ups reported from Castle down to Mayor, with most of the action around the 90m mark. With plenty of bait, birds and blue water you would have to imagine the gamefish will be around for quite some time yet!
BIG KINGI'S!
We have had some epic jigging sessions over the last week, with heaps of solid kings around. Most of the pins from the back of Slipper, around the Aldies and out wide are holding good sized kingis. They are FAT, and have been feasting up a storm recently. We counted twelve sauries out of one of the kingis we kept for the table ( the large majority of kingis have been put back to fight another day.) The next two months would have to be one of the best times to head out and get into some awesome jigging action.

SNAPPER

With four weeks of constant easterlies (no wonder the water is so good) we've trailered over to the Firth on the odd occasion and the fishing has been superb. You have to love the snapper fishing on the Coromandel in Autumn with good quality fish and plenty of them. Softbaiting the weed lines in close to the shallows first or last thing have been produced good fish in the 4-6kg mark, and drifting out deep under the numerous work ups is the go during the day
On the East Coast, there are plenty of snapper around too around Shoe and Slipper Island. Again drifting over the sand is the business during the day in 20-40m and the change of light you'll find some good snapper moving in to the shallows and reefs.
Autumn would rate as my favourite time to be snapper fishing around Pauanui and Slipper Island, especially during the change of light.
EPIC WINTER ADVENTURES
With the fishing really firing its a reminder that some of the Coromandel's best fishing, especially softbaiting and jigging, can be found over the autumn and winter months coming up, so theres no excuse to put fishing to the side now that daylight saving is over and done with!
However as the days start getting shorter you might want to have a think about joining us on an escape to the tropics...!! We'll be having a weeks break from the Coromandel again this winter to fish the Blue Marlin mecca of Vanuatu and the remote Epi Island with one of Vanuatu's best operators. Those that came with us last year described it as 'the trip of a lifetime.' Get in touch with us on the link below if you are interested in any of our upcoming trips, on the Coromandel or beyond.
