Fishing ReportsBest Western Braeside Resort Fishing ReportThe Easter break is here and the Rotorua region is experiencing ideal fishing conditions with clear streams and blue skies. The only slight hiccup has been the odd windy day which has made fishing for some anglers a challenge but then if you work as a team many difficulties can be overcome. Last week during very windy conditions two long established fishing partners, Alan Deverson and Ray Punter showed the value of team work while out fishing on LakeRotoiti. Jigging spots were very limited due to the strong wind and after only landing two trout while jigging in HauparuBay they decided to try near Gisborne Point.
The better boatman controlled the boat producing a slow drift parallel to the bank (giving up his chance to land a fish) while his competent fishing partner jig fished. Four drifts produced four rainbows between two and four kilos showing the value of good team work. The catch was shared at the end of the day, the fishermen taking two fish each and giving two away to friends who were too old to go fishing and I am sure they appreciated this gesture.
The other areas that have been producing fish jigging and deep trolling are the cliffs by Hinehopu and the area around PatekoIsland.
There has not been a lot of action as yet for those harling in RangiuruBay and Stony Point but this area is worth keeping an eye on at this time of the year. Don’t discount this area of the lake, give it a try but if there is little happening be happy to move on.
RedBeach and the Ariki Arm are two places I would spend some time at over the weekend either jigging or trolling. The Outlet has also been productive for these two fishing methods.
The deeper sections of LakeRotorua are the favoured areas to target. The drop offs surrounding the shallow margins off Parkcliffe and MissionBay are prime locations to head for over the Easter break.
The fine weather that we have been receiving is having little effect on the movement of fish into the Waiteti and Ngongotaha streams.
The mouths have been relatively quiet with the bulk of the action happening further up the streams.
The Awahou surrendered a 4.7 kilo brown hen to Peter Tuyay while Stephen Houben landed a 5.2 kilo brown in the Ngongotaha stream. These two streams along with the Waiteti would be the pick of the spots for the fly fishing angler this weekend.
Dry fly action on the outlying rivers including the Whirinaki and Rangitaiki continues. March Brown, Hardies and size 16 Royal Wulf have been the standout patterns.
The majority of the teams that are participating in the World Fly Fishing Championships are now here and I would like to wish them well in their competition and hope they have an enjoyable stay in Rotorua.
