Fishing ReportsThe Espresso ReportJumbo The Hauraki Gulf has been treated to some of the most exciting and visually spectacular of fish lately – big, dark green meanies of the Kahawai kind. Big monster Kahawai are making a comeback. Impressive in condition and in their fighting capabilities, they’re certainly great fun on the light tackle being used by so many fisho’s with Soft Bait setups as well as the lighter-weight bait rigs. The entire Gulf has been seemingly alive with these marauding munters of late, splashing and crashing the baitfish everywhere the eye can see. With a good pair of sunglasses on they’ve been exciting to watch blistering through the water chasing their prey. Often looking like Kingfish boiling up the surface water all over the show.
They’re also excellent indicators of where some nice Snapper may be hanging out too!
Lurking
The Kingis are certainly sneaking around these Kahawai schools, the midwater Mackerel are getting hammered from all directions, above and below – these baitfish are relatively easy to catch on a Sabiki rig and sent straight back down as a livie for either a Big Red, or one of the Kingfish that’ll swallow them whole no worries. Be prepared!
Cheese and Stockmarkets
The Man in the Moon seems to be affecting things lately, everything from international stock markets to feeding fish, bringing a few lack lustre performances here and there. For the fisho the style of bite out there is definitely being hampered by the orbiting Cheese-man. This last week the bite times seem to have been a little short-lived, but when they are on they are ON! Then a slow or steady bite until the next time the dinner gong goes off. But with some fine days and flat seas coming it’s a great way to wile away a few hours even if the moon is bright eyed, bushy tailed and looking down like the sharemarket indices.
Easter Bunny
Good weather here and there, several official days off… well sounds like some fishing is required ay! In close it’s a definite to try around the inner islands like Rakino, the Noises and Motuora, and right in the middle of the city channels – just remember, might has right and those big tinnys, a.k.a. container ships, don’t give way. If sleeping-in is on the cards over the long weekend, then a later afternoon fish drifting the inner harbour highway and byways could be a very good way to end the day.
Out further past the islands in the big puddle – it’s merely a matter of either drifting with a twitchy hand – turning up the goods for many, and keeping a lookout on the sounder and the skies for some fishy looking indicators.
Fresh fish over Easter guaranteed (almost).
See you out there.
