Fishing Reports

The Store report for Feb 24-2 March

Well I wish that I could say that we had heaps of rain and that the rivers are brimming with water but we rec a little smiggen that has all but touched the ground. We have had some heavier showers but the heat and the warmth not allowing it to settle.

We had some reasonable rain forecast but with wind and the fact that the low seemed to skirt us we as a result rec only a sprinkle.

Our lakes and rivers are now very low and they are at a point where, we have been in the area on total fire ban and the forest is completely locked down, which means that if your in and around the fishery please please take great care esp if your a smoker, or any where near forestry.

The rivers that are spring fed such as the Waitahanui are cooler and naturally have a more reasonable flow and so have had a little more pressure, fish have moved into some of the rivers as a result of looking for food, esp as the lake seems at this point bereft of food. Perhaps out wish for a perfect lake means that the bad stuff that has for years being able to flow into the lake has stopped and such the balance has altered and so we have a perfectly clean lake but a part of the food chain has altered thus not providing a vital link for fish food supply. Only a thought.

The smaller rivers are touch though if your a seasoned angler fishing the riffles and fishing the evening rise, after dark often in the lower river has proved to be some fun.

The Tongariro still has reasonable flow and as a result has more pressure, the whole river has so much water and variety to fish it not hard if your prepared to fish to the conditions, to find fish, some of which are quite reasonable. Once again you will need to pick your water, esp the water that is busy or riffley.

Lower rivers all have a resonable number of browns all looking for food, they will have detected you as you left home so if you can see them they can see you, fish the broken water in the hope that you can tempt them!

River mouths are as such with the lower lake level a little more defined and as a result your able to wade them a little easier, be very careful, of the drop offs. Rips are fishing best earlier esp morning, the first part of the morning.
