Gamefishing Special Update!

While the net is spreading a little further of late, it’s still very much a Waihou Bay show.  A few yellowfin (25-35 kilos) have been taken over the past few days behind Whale Island which rekindles the hope of meatball action there in the near future.  Some very pretty water around now so one could catch a fine fish anywhere.  Here are just a few highlights of recent times, some great catches and some true tropical revelations

1)                 An average hapuka taken recently at Ranfurly Bank by a decent sized tiger shark

2)                 A huge (estimated 45 foot) whale shark seen close to Lottin Point

3)                 Manta Rays seen feeding at night near White Island in a boats deck lights

4)                 A 263 kilo blue marlin weighed in and on the way to the smokers by 8.30am!

5)                 A double strike of stripeys only 3 nautical miles from Hick’s Bay in 80 metres of water which is usually cold and green.  A further 8 or 9 fish were seen tailing and feeding during the course of the battle.

6)                 An estimated 300 kilo blue marlin tagged and released at Ranfurly Bank after an intense 25 minute battle.  What’s the big deal you ask?  The fish was landed by the “Enchanter” in 44 metres of water as they approached the highspot to go kingi fishing!

7)                 An estimated 350 kilo blue tagged and released by a couple at Waihou Bay to offset this we have questions:

1)     where are the hammerheads – very few seem

2)     Very few spearfish

3)     Has anyone seen a turtle?

4)     Mahi mahi are around but a large and solitary, hardly in plague proportions

This season continues to intrigue and surprise – long may it progress in doing so.
