Best Western Braeside Resort Fishing Report

Mike Cotter January 25th 2008
The continuing hot weather has caused a mass movement of fish from LakeRotorua into the spring fed streams. Many local and visiting anglers that have fished the Awahou over the past several years have never seen such a large congregation of trout in this stream.

There are regularly groups of ten to twenty fish working the mouths of these streams feeding profusely on smelt and small larvae. Anglers are having success in the stream with glo bugs and copper beaded pheasant tail nymphs. At the mouth there are a few different patterns that appear to stand out for anglers. These are the A.P. nymph, Kilwell No. 1, Ginger Mick and Grey Ghost.

The upper reaches of the Waiteti are not holding the number of fish that the Awahou is presently holding but is still worth a fish as is the Ngongotaha. The rain that we have received over the last few days has enhanced the fishing in these areas. The beaded Prince nymph fished in conjunction with a small Grey Ghost is proving a winning combination at present.

Anglers who enjoy trolling cannot go past LakeRotorua as it continues to fish very consistently. If you have any visitors wishing to take home a few trout this is definitely the lake to be on. The areas in the vicinity of Waiteti, Hamurana and Awahou would be my main target areas at the moment.

Shallow trolling out from these stream mouths with the red headed brown trout, White Clown, Silver Clown and the Rotorua Special has consistently produced results. The flies of choice are the Grey Ghost and Silver Dorothy.

Jigging on LakeRotoiti is the preferred method of fishing for anglers wishing to land one of the lakes magnificent Rainbow trout. At present the fish that I have seen are weighing in anywhere between the 3 and 4.5 kilo mark. The most favoured flies are the brown bodied Parsons Glory, pearl bodied Jack Sprat and the Grey Ghost. These patterns are working best in the small sizes.

Trolling on this lake has turned up the odd surprise with a few Brown trout being landed at Emery’s Reef. Harling in the early morning in OkawaBay is also producing fish to the Silver Dorothy, Parsons Glory and the Eliminator.

For those jigging on LakeTarawera the spots to target if the wind permits are HumphreysBay, RedBeach and Twin Streams. The fish on this lake continue to be attracted by the Green Orbit, Jack Sprat and Grey Ghost. Trolling with 15 to 20 colours of lead line or a 150m of copper line is still your best option while the lake temperature remains high.
