Fishing Reports

Bay of Islands -'Major Tom II'

Lot's of fine weather has meant plenty of boat activity in the Bay, and some great fishing to go with it.

Early action came from good schools of snapper mid water under the pilchards and anchovies in the triangle from Mita's Foul across to Onslow and back up to Black Rocks. There is still activity in this area, especially with Gulp softbaits, and whole pilchards, but excessive boat activity seems to have made the fish a bit scary and broken up the schools.

Over recent days the best results seem to have come from around the Nine Pin, fishing deep, though choppy easterlies have made conditions unpleasant in this area.

Major Tom II has had some great kingi action at Rocky Point. The fish are not huge, mostly 4kg to 8kg, but the action has been frantic at times. Results have come at both anchor, and from drifting through the large schools of trevally to the west of Hansen's Reef.

Divers have been reporting some large schools of large kingis around the Hole in the Rock, but as always, these fish seem to be rather wary.

The marlin season is off to an early start, and Major Tom tagged a couple of stripeys on the 3rd Jan. The fishing action came from the 240M line, East of Cape Brett, with other action reported around the same line down towards  the Poor Knights. Some good yellowfin have also been taken in this area over the last few days.

As always, drop me an email at MAJOR.TOM@xtra.co.nz if you have any queries.
